## Which of these just bolt on, and which need programming?

## Why can I not just swap in a used PCM?

Because on these trucks the engine controller is married to the vehicle. It carries the truck's identity and talks to the immobiliser in the ignition system, so a controller from another truck will not simply start yours: the anti-theft system sees a module that does not belong and refuses. A dealer or an independent shop with the manufacturer software can write your truck's information into a used module, and that step is a real cost you should price before you buy the part. We would rather lose the sale than sell you a module you cannot use, so we say this on every module inquiry.

## Is a used alternator a good buy?

Usually yes, and it is one of the better value parts in the yard. An alternator is a simple machine that is normally replaced because a bearing got noisy or the internal regulator failed, and a good used unit from a lower-mileage donor costs a fraction of a new one. We spin every alternator and check output on the donor before removal. The thing to match is the output rating: a truck built with a tow package or a heavy electrical load often carries a higher-amp alternator, and stepping up to one is fine while stepping down is not.

## What is checked before an electrical part is tagged?

- **Alternators**: for charging output and bearing noise, on the running donor.
- **Starters**: for engagement and draw, cranking the donor.
- **Modules**: for physical condition, no corrosion or water ingress, pins straight, and the donor's year and options recorded.
- **Harnesses and fuse boxes**: for cut, melted or repaired sections, with connector photos.
